CAMBORNE 'B' Band
West of England Bandsmen's Festival 1st Section Champions 2010 & West of England 2nd Section Champions 2009
Camborne 'B' Band at the 2010 West of England Regional Championships in Torquay
Camborne 'B' Band, was set up in 2002 by Musical Director, Alan Pope, as a stepping stone between Camborne Youth and Town Bands, with the aim to give the members with the interest, commitment and ability more experience in contesting and the best musical training.
Out of the 28 members of the band, 21 are members of the Youth Band, with the youngest being only 9 and the oldest 19. With the 7 older members, the average age of the band is still only twenty four. Camborne 'B' Band is therefore composed primarily of young people and a small proportion of adult players who help them progress further.
In March 2003, Camborne 'B' won the Fourth Section at the CBBA Championships in Truro. Later that year, they gained 3rd prize, out of 25 bands, in the Fourth Section at the West of England Regional Championships. The test piece, Lydian Pictures', was written by the young, local composer, Simon Dobson. This fantastic result qualified them for the National Finals and secured them promotion to the Third Section; a great achievement in such a short time! Dundee was the location of the Lower Section National Finals in September 2003 where the band achieved a very creditable 15th, out of 21 bands, at their first ever National competition.
In March 2005 the Band performed ‘Tam O’Shanter’s Ride’ by Denis Wright at the West of England Regional Championships in Torquay and gained an excellent 5th place out of 16. Although they didn’t qualify, the band were extremely pleased with this result. The following year they were awarded 5th place, once again, for their performance of Gilbert Vinter’s ‘Entertainments’.
2007 saw Camborne ‘B’ Band win two West of England Third Section titles. A performance of Darrol Barry's "Prelude and Jubilate" at the West of England Area led the band to 1st prize, qualifying them for the National Finals once again and securing promotion to the Second Section in 2008. Following a stylish performance of "Divertimento" by Bryan Kelly, the band also won their section at the West of England Bandsmen's Festival at Bugle in June. In September the band achieved a fantastic 4th place (out of 18) at the National Finals in Harrogate for an outstanding performance of "Imperium" by Bruce Fraser.
In only it's seventh year, the band has been promoted to the First Section (from 2010) after claiming victory in the Second Section of the 2009 West of England Championships, again qualifying for the National Finals in Harrogate where they gained an excellent 3rd place!
